THE POWER OF CO-REGULATION FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN
What is it?
Co-regulation is the interactive process of regulatory support, often between a trusted adult and child. This process involves the influence of each others’ physiological and emotional states to activate the parasympathetic nervous (rest and digest) system.
The Benefits
Co-regulation has the power to support the nervous system to a state of calm and equilibrium after facing a challenge, conflict or high levels of stress.
Resetting the nervous system through regulation and connection:
Promotes emotional stability, increasing overall wellbeing.
Provides a sense of security, support and shared understanding fostering a trusting relationship, increasing cooperation and engagement.
Self-regulation grows out of co-regulation, when adults model and teach children strategies to manage their emotions, this can empower them to handle their emotions more independently.
Self-regulation skills have been linked to better health, improved performance and long-lasting impacts.
Strategies
Co-regulation involves clear and direct modelling and teaching of regulation strategies.
Introduce and practice the suggestions during calm times with a warm, calming presence. Practical strategies:
Go outside or move away from the space in order to decompress from potential sensory overload.
Practice deep breathing. Teach children how to take thoughtful breaths by inhaling through their nose and exhaling out their mouth. Challenge them to make their shoulders as “big” as possible.
Encourage ways to release tension being held in their body. Physical activity such as walking, jumping and dancing, and sensory tools like stress balls or clay can shift energy in the body.
Emotional regulation is a crucial skill, helping children to manage emotions, reduce worry and anxiety, and improve overall wellbeing.
If you are concerned about your child, we can provide individualised strategies and support to develop their knowledge and skills.
